MCU Fan Pens 10 Page Petition to Make Marvel TV Shows Canon Again

One devoted Marvel Cinematic Universe fan has published a 10-page petition asking Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to recognize the original Marvel TV shows as part of the franchise’s official canon. Initially, shows like Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter were presumed to be a spin-off of their movie counterparts. After all, they’re fronted by characters who originated in the films. Over time, however, they became increasingly insignificant to what was happening on the big screen.

Meanwhile, the arrival of streaming projects further diverged the two live-action offerings of Marvel Entertainment. As ABC moved on with their traditional network projects, Marvel TV’s partnership with Netflix was also launched. It birthed several series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Mining inspiration from Feige’s approach in the film world, these separate stories ultimately culminated in The Defenders. Unfortunately, that was the last time the superhero team assembled. Once news broke out that Disney+ was going to be airing exclusive shows from the MCU proper, they were canceled one-by-one. Now, Marvel Studios is handling its small screen endeavors itself, with Marvel TV now defunct.

As the MCU expands, thriving on the big screen and on Disney+, one fan has formally asked Marvel Studios to once and for all acknowledge that the old Marvel TV shows are canon. In the 10-page petition which has been was shared on Twitter, author @bej_t, who has also been actively working on MCU Wiki for the past six years as a content moderator, said they started writing it back in July 2020, and have only finished this month. The document, titled “A Passionate and Concerned Appeal for the Preservation of Marvel Cinematic Universe Television Canon, from a Devoted Fan,” lays down the intention of the open letter and says that this has come from their love of the Marvel TV franchise. The author of the petition has also gathered signatures from across the MCU Wiki to prove that this is something that the fans want. As part of its primary intentions, the letter cites issues among the community when it comes to talking about whether or not the early Marvel TV shows are canon. This is a favorite topic of conversation among loyal followers of the franchise, and often finds people on multiple different opposing sides. As Marvel Studios has not come up with an official stance on the matter, the status of Marvel TV series in the MCU will continue to be up for debate. To be fair to Feige and his team, however, it is not easy to absorb the narratives from the Marvel TV series, especially ones in which they didn’t have any creative input. Simply cherry-picking which elements they’d wish to make canon to work within the established narrative of the MCU would also prove a tricky task.

Of course, it is possible that Marvel could use the burgeoning multiverse to do this. Since alternate realities and timelines have now been properly established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have presumed it to be the gateway to bringing in other Marvel franchises into the Sacred Timeline. That could be the case in Spider-Man: No Way Home with previous Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire expected by many fans to pop up. Even Charlie Cox’s Daredevil from the Marvel/Netflix pocket is also long rumored to be involved. In any case, the last few years have proven that online petitions can work, so it will be interesting to see what Marvel Studios’ reply would be — if they plan on responding at all.
