New BTS images have surfaced from Paul King’s upcoming Wonka movie, and they show Timothée Chalamet in his full costume as the iconic candy maker.
New BTS photos offer a detailed look at Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka costume. Billed as an origin story for the eccentric chocolatier from Roald Dahl’s iconic 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka is scheduled for release on March 17, 2023, by Warner Bros. The film chronicles the upbringing, rise to fame, and life of the titular character pre his career as a candyman. Plot details on the movie are slim, although it’s said to be packed to the brim with musical numbers. Chalamet was announced to play the lead in May, with Paddington‘s Paul King directing and Simon Farnaby writing the screenplay.
Production on Wonka is well underway, and the cast has also been rounded out with a number of glittering names. Besides Chalamet, the movie stars Keegan Michael-Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, and Olivia Colman, with screenwriter Farnaby also set for a role. Earlier this month, Chalamet surprised fans when he shared a glimpse of himself as the quirky candy maker. The image, where the star posed in costume, generated a lot of attention, although reactions were somewhat divided. Some weren’t content with the vibe of the film, while others claimed a single picture isn’t enough to judge Wonka‘s quality.
Now, some more photos have surfaced from the film’s set, and they present a better picture of what Wonka would look like. On Monday, the Timothée Chalamet fan account, tchalametdaily, shared a bunch of BTS images from the movie featuring the actor in his full Willy Wonka costume. In the pictures, Chalamet seems to be filming a scene for Wonka, and in one image, he can also be observed busting some moves to what presumably is a dance number. The Dune star is also holding what seems to be a wooden suitcase, although that isn’t a conventional attribute of Willy Wonka’s peculiar ensemble. Take a look at the post below.
When Chalamet first shared his look for Wonka, his dark and Victorian-esque attire fueled speculations that WB was giving a gritty and edgy spin to the beloved character. But those reports were quickly crushed by the leading man, who said that the movie “isn’t mining the darker emotions in life.” Rather, he insists, that Wonka is a “celebration” of one’s uniqueness and the idea of “being O.K.” with that uniqueness, although it may not “fit in” with the society’s traditional norms. As a teen idol, Chalamet has already exhibited his ability to play off-center characters to perfection. And hopefully, his turn as Willy Wonka will also woo fans in the same way as his previous performances.
There is no denying that Dahl’s vision for Willy Wonka was more vibrant and cheerful than Chalamet’s characterization in the upcoming movie. But upon closer inspection, fans can observe that the star’s look, in many ways, resembles the outfit sported by Gene Wilder in 1971’s Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. The plum-colored velvet tailcoat, beige trousers, leather boots, patterned waistcoat, and brown hat are all intact, though they are more darkly accented than the ones worn by Wilder. But perhaps after post-production, the colors will be made to appear brighter, and the cinematography will be adjusted to tell a more spirited story. Of course, there are no comparisons between Chalamet and Wilder, but one can hope that the actor would incorporate some elements of the legendary Emmy winner’s stage-work into his performance in Wonka.
